Teacher Development Grant 2026-2027 Project Summary

The Studio Progression Framework is a year-long pilot initiative designed to transform how visual art is taught in middle school classrooms. While disciplines such as music and athletics often rely on clear, step-by-step skill levels, visual art education can focus primarily on finished products rather than visible skill development. Grounded in research on growth mindset and studio thinking, this framework breaks down foundational art practices like observation, line quality, composition, and color theory, into clear, sequential levels. Piloted in a middle school classroom serving grades 5 through 8 at an independent PK–12 school in southeastern Wisconsin, the initiative gives students clear benchmarks, practice exercises, and reflection tools to track their artistic growth over time.

Beyond the classroom, the project engages art educators in practitioner-based inquiry to strengthen instructional practices and explore how the framework might be adapted for broader use. While the lead teacher implements the framework, collaborating art educators serve as thought partners, providing feedback on its clarity, effectiveness, and adaptability. The project will produce a digital guide featuring skill charts, instructional strategies, teacher reflections, and student portfolio samples to share with the broader art education community. By making artistic growth visible and trackable, the Studio Progression Framework shifts the focus from isolated assignments to intentional skill development, helping students build confidence, persistence, and creative independence.
