Academic Enrichment Grant

 2010-2011 Project Summary

Bethany Kirkpatrick

See My Song, Hear My Voice • Westbrook, Maine

iPad computers will serve as composition instruments for this music education project in which the music classroom becomes a music technology laboratory. Electronic keyboards will have computers equipped to capture, manipulate and archive student compositions. Students will learn not only by reading, hearing, and writing about music but also by composing. Students will understand from the beginning that music is a shared experience and provides a way to express emotions when words fail. iPad computers will enable students to take their music to the community and share their voices. Students will produce original compositions that reflect each unit of music study, from jazz to an original score expressive of a student’s individual musical perspective. These compositions, demonstrative of each student’s knowledge of form, genre, notation, and musical elements, will also showcase their individual growth as students, musicians and composers. Students will then produce a CD of their original music to share with families and community.
