BOOM! Magazine

Academic Enrichment Grant

 2011-2012 Project Summary

Ann Collier

BOOM! Magazine • Denver, Colorado

This project began in 2008 with support from the McCarthey-Dressman Foundation. BOOM!’s after school program and its one-on-one mentoring helps kids of all abilities, from extremely talented to inexperienced writers, express themselves, improve writing abilities, and gain confidence and life skills. Over the past three years, the program has produced 8 publications, mentored more than 30 student writers, and reached more than 2,500 student readers. Twice a week after school, BOOM! writers work with 5 community volunteers who tutor them as they write articles and creative fiction. They also work with professional graphic designers to design the 30-page publication. As students see their name in print, they consider themselves authors and find the writing process to be an outlet for their own creativity. A website and social networking capability will connect students between the participating sites and provide a vehicle for shared creative content. During this grant period the magazine will either merge as a program with a pre-existing non-profit or form its own 501(c)3 status.
