Aquaponics: Growing our own Food Sustainably

Academic Enrichment Grant

 2015-2016 Project Summary

Al Raby School for Community and Environment • Chicago, IL

Aquaponics is an innovative idea that connects students to their community and environment. Building an aquaponics lab will help establish a hybrid food science/culinary arts program, and while there are a number of schools doing similar projects in the area, this is the only one to combine the two disciplines. Using scientific method and inquiry, students will cultivate and harvest a number of different fruits and vegetables, along side raising and farming tilapia with the express goal of selling the produce to local businesses and individuals. This process will help students gain an appreciation for how food comes to their table as well as deepening their connection with their community.
