Teacher Development Grant 2026-2027 Project Summary

Mwangaza Education for Partnership has been awarded a grant from the McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation to expand its Safe Schools initiative through a teacher-led professional development model in three public secondary schools in Arusha, Tanzania. Building on the organization’s successful work reaching more than 26,500 students since 2018, the project will train nine teacher leaders as Safe School and Peace Club coordinators who will, in turn, mentor and train their colleagues in nonviolent communication, conflict resolution, child safeguarding, alternative discipline, and personal effectiveness. By strengthening teacher leadership and creating sustainable peer-to-peer professional learning communities, the project will help schools move from reactive discipline practices to proactive, relationship-centered approaches that foster safe and supportive learning environments.

Serving approximately 2,400 students and their teachers, the initiative will also establish student-led Peace Clubs that promote conflict management, peer mentoring, and positive school culture. Teachers and students will collaboratively develop a Peace Club training manual, role-plays, stories, videos, and other learning resources that document the project’s impact and can be shared with other schools. Through ongoing mentoring, reflection, and evaluation, the project aims to build lasting school capacity, reduce bullying and school violence, and create a replicable model for improving both teacher practice and student well-being across Tanzanian schools.
