Kinder Art Club

Academic Enrichment Grant 2023-2024 Project Summary

Reagan Isman

Art Education • Kinder, LA

This project seeks to bring dedicated art education into the classrooms of Kinder High School in rural Southwest Louisiana, where all schools are classified as Title One and creative outlets are extremely limited. The school serves 426 students, 60% of whom are economically disadvantaged and have had very little exposure to arts education or cultural experiences beyond their immediate area. Many students naturally express themselves through drawing during their free time and repeatedly express a desire for more creative opportunities. The McCarthey Dressman Education grant will allow the school to create an official art class starting in the second semester.

The proposed art curriculum would introduce students to a wide range of visual arts including acrylic painting, charcoal and conte crayon drawing, pen and ink, ceramics, printmaking, screen printing, architecture, and interior design. These media were chosen based on student interest and their potential to connect with the rich Cajun culture of their community—an identity deeply rooted in family, tradition, folk art, and local pride. The course would culminate in student portfolios and sketchbooks, allowing for personalized expression and growth. Long-term goals include developing public art projects such as town murals, showcasing student talent and instilling a sense of community contribution and pride.

This project offers an inclusive and academically enriching opportunity for students who may not find belonging in athletics or other traditional extracurriculars. It will foster creativity, build confidence, and enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills, all while offering a culturally relevant and emotionally supportive outlet. With strong interest from students, demonstrated need in the school community, and the successful precedent of an award-winning band program, bringing art into the classrooms will create lasting impact. This grant will not only be an investment in the students—it is a commitment to equity, cultural celebration, and future possibility.
